Let's not kid ourselves: intimate trimmers are a bit of a mystery. Between marketing promises and reality, between "men's" models and those "for women," we're completely lost. In 2025, it's time to sort things out and tell you the whole truth about these little devices that are revolutionizing intimate grooming.

So who is it really for? Is it worth it? And most importantly, is it right for you? Spoiler alert: the answer will probably surprise you.

What is the difference with a normal lawnmower?

Honestly, this is THE question we get asked all the time. And we understand why: at first glance, it looks like any other lawnmower, right?

Actually, not at all. A lawnmower is like comparing a city car to a 4x4 for rough terrain. Same basic function, but completely different design.

The real differences that matter:

First, the blades. In your intimate areas, your skin is thinner and more sensitive than elsewhere. A conventional trimmer will pull on the hairs, causing micro-cuts and irritation. Intimate trimmers use blades specially designed to glide smoothly.

Next, shape. Try shaving your testicles with a beard trimmer: mission impossible (without mega-big cuts, and I speak from experience). Intimate trimmers are more compact, with angles designed to reach hard-to-reach areas.

And then there's the waterproofing. Because in the shower, it's still more practical. Most conventional trimmers can't withstand water, unlike some intimate models.

Is this a razor?

No, and it's important to make the distinction. A razor cuts the hair close to the skin, which can cause cuts and ingrown hairs in exchange for smooth skin. An intimate trimmer cuts the hair slightly above the skin, even in the 0mm position (without a guard), which leaves a minimal length of hair but significantly reduces the risk of cuts, burns, and, above all, ingrown hairs.

This difference is what makes all the difference: you get a clean, crisp result without the hassle of traditional shaving. No more painful after-effects with pimples everywhere.

And if you prefer the baby-skin effect? Well, you can use your intimate trimmer to clear the area in broad widths and finish with a razor blade; it will be much simpler. Razors with blades don't like long hairs very much, intimate trimmers make short work of them.

Is it compatible with everyone?

So that's the big advantage of intimate trimmers: they're designed to adapt to all skin types and all hair types. Whether you have sensitive skin, thick or fine hair, curly or straight, a good intimate trimmer can handle it all.

Unlike razors, which require a specific technique depending on your skin type, or hair removal creams, which can cause allergic reactions, trimmers remain the most universal solution.

Male, female, non-binary: no matter your gender, intimate anatomy remains broadly the same in terms of sensitivity. That's why a well-designed trimmer works for everyone.

Why are some dedicated to men or women?

Excellent question! And the answer will make you smile: it's mostly marketing.

We wear pink for women and Transformer-style clippers for men, something very manly vs. something very girly. But at Billy's, we say no to that.

Because in reality, the technical requirements are almost identical. Intimate areas, whether male or female, have the same characteristics: sensitive skin, often thicker hair, and hard-to-reach areas.

So why this separation? Mainly to reassure consumers. Many people feel more comfortable with a product that "looks like them." It's psychological, but it matters.

On a practical level, the only differences may be:

  • The color (pink vs black, because apparently it matters)
  • Packaging and communication
  • Sometimes the size (slightly smaller for "women's" models)

At Billy, we've chosen inclusivity: a single clipper, five stylish colors, and it adapts to all bodies, all shapes, with ergonomics and easy handling for everyone.

What are the specific needs of men and women?

Even though the mower may be the same, the usage habits sometimes differ.

Men's side:

  • Often focus on the testicles (ultra-delicate area with thinner skin than anywhere else)
  • Pubic maintenance to avoid the jungle, often with a hoof to leave a little length
  • Sometimes torso and armpits as a bonus

Women's side:

  • Jersey care (especially the edges)
  • Length adjustment rather than full shaving
  • Armpits and legs often in the same session

But in the end, everyone does what they want. And that's exactly the message we want to convey: your hair, your style.

What regularity is necessary to amortize the purchase?

That's real business! An intimate trimmer costs between €50 and €120 depending on the model. To make it cost-effective, you need to consider your current habits.

If you go to the beautician once a month for €30-40, you'll pay for it in 2-3 sessions. If you buy disposable razors every week, it's the same, it quickly pays for itself.

But beyond the financial aspect, think about the practical side: no more appointments to make, no more impossible slots, no more shaving sessions that last 30 minutes. With a trimmer, 2-3 minutes in the shower and it's done.

For regular maintenance, it depends on your hair, but generally:

  • Once a week if you like it, very clear
  • Every 15 days for standard maintenance
  • Once a month if you just want to avoid the jungle

At Billy, we consider it profitable to invest in an intimate trimmer if you take care of your intimate parts at least once a month. At this rate, you can keep your blade for 6 months and it will cost you much less than beauty appointments or razors (yes, you shouldn't keep your disposable razor for 1 month, bacteria and other things that we want to avoid can develop on it).

Is Billy really different?

So, we're not going to lie: we created Billy because we found that the existing options didn't really meet our expectations.

What we love about the Billy:

Integrated LED lighting . Because honestly, who wants to play hide-and-seek with their hair in a poorly lit bathroom?

Completely waterproof . You can use it in the shower without stress, and above all, clean it easily under running water.

USB-C charging . No more proprietary chargers that mysteriously disappear. You can even charge it with your phone's cable. (Personal anecdote: using a different mower before creating billy, I had to buy the whole kit just because I lost the charger and obviously, they don't sell the cable alone...)

5 cutting heights (0 to 12mm). Something to suit all styles, from neat to trim.

The soft-touch finish in 5 ultra-stylish colors . Because when you hold it in your hand, it might as well be pleasant, and when it's placed in your bathroom, you'll love walking past it and looking at it.

And then, above all, there is the approach, the Billy movement : we don't make a distinction between men and women, we assume that it's for everyone, and we break the taboos and we make sure that intimacy becomes the basis of a good relationship with oneself and others ❤️.

What is the real cost of the blades?

As for changing blades, for intensive use of your billy, we recommend changing the blade every 3 months. For regular use, every 6 months, which would only mean 2 blades per year, this remains a more than reasonable budget, especially at the price of the pack of blades . Better still, with automatic and regular delivery of blades you don't even have to worry about it, you receive your blade directly and you just have to change it.

For Billy, a replacement blade starts at around €21 and should be changed every 3 to 6 months depending on your usage. Over a year, that's a budget that starts at €42/year.

It's a cost, for sure. But compare with:

  • Beautician: €360-480/year (€30-40 x 12)
  • Disposable razors: €150-200/year (yes, you're not supposed to keep a disposable razor in your bathroom for weeks)
  • Hair removal creams: €100-150/year

Ultimately, even with blades, you're still a financial winner. And in terms of comfort and practicality, there's no comparison.

And most importantly, by taking out a billy blade subscription when purchasing your billy, it comes with a lifetime warranty as long as your subscription is valid and current. So you'll be able to use it for a very long time.

Tutorial for changing your billy blade

Can we still cut ourselves?

The truth? With a well-designed intimate trimmer, it's almost impossible. The very principle of the trimmer is that the blade never directly touches the skin. BUT, yes, it's still possible. Especially in men where the skin of the testicles is ultra thin and can still pass through the exclusive protection of the blade. It is therefore necessary when using it for the first time to follow a few simple tips listed here and above all to go slowly, but after a few uses, it will become extremely simple and sometimes, it is even possible to bleed slightly, not because of a cut but because a hair pulled out on extra thin skin can cause this.

At Billy, the ceramic blade is protected by an anti-cut system which limits the risk of cuts as much as possible; you can't protect a blade more than that.

And even if a micro cut is possible on extra thin skin, it's nothing compared to cuts from a razor or traditional clippers (personal experience...). But again, with the right hand, this shouldn't happen ;)

Is it difficult to use?

Honestly? It's easier than a razor. No lather, no special technique, no direction of travel to follow.

You turn it on, brush it over the hair, turn it off. Period. Even if it's your first time, you'll have it down in 2 minutes.

The only little tips:

  • Start with the less sensitive areas to get used to it.
  • Use the LED light to see what you are doing
  • Increase the cutting height gradually if you are starting from a long distance.
  • If it's your first time, take it easy!!!

What if I'm already used to something else?

Transition from the razor

This is probably the easiest transition. You use the same technique, skin taut and we pass the blade, but you will quickly see, same sensation but without the drawbacks. First time use and you will never go back (especially thanks to the time saved and fewer ingrown hairs...)

Be careful again, if your goal is to have extra smooth skin, the intimate trimmer is not for you, because it will leave you with a mini length to ensure protection against cuts and ingrown hairs.

At Billy's, we prefer the intimate trimmer, less risk and much faster but this is only a personal preference because we are not attached to the extra shaved skin look (which only lasts this smooth skin sensation lasts 24/48 hours...)

Transition from beautician

This is different. The beautician removes the hair from the root, while the clippers cut it. Regrowth will be a little faster, but much less painful.

The advantage? You can have your hair serviced whenever you want, without an appointment, and adjust the length to suit your needs.

At Billy, we believe that beauticians and intimate trimmers are compatible. Sometimes you want to be perfectly groomed, but sometimes you want to trim in two minutes, and it all depends on your available time, your budget, and your desires. So, for us, we're keeping both.

Is it laser compatible?

Good question! If you have laser treatments, you can use an intimate trimmer.

The laser requires the hair to be cut short but still present under the skin. Clippers do exactly that, unlike waxing, which removes the hair completely.

Between your laser sessions, you can maintain it with the clipper. The clipper leaves a little less than a millimeter of hair, which is normally perfect for the laser, but it's best to ask your laser practice for advice.

Does it really prevent ingrown hairs?

This is one of the big advantages of clippers over razors. By cutting the hair slightly above the skin rather than flush, you prevent the hair from growing back under the skin.

Ingrown hairs are mainly caused by:

  • Too clean a cut (razor)
  • Hair that grows back in curls
  • Irritated skin that closes over the hair

With a mower like Billy, these three causes are impossible.

Is there a burning sensation afterward?

Now that's the ultimate test! With a razor, you know: that burning sensation on freshly shaved areas, especially if you have sensitive skin.

With a good intimate trimmer, this sensation disappears completely. Why? Because there is no direct contact between the blade and the skin, so no mechanical irritation.

You can even go over the same spot multiple times without any problem. Try it with a razor, you'll see the difference!

Who shouldn't use an intimate trimmer?

Let's be honest: there are some contraindications, even if they are rare.

Avoid if you have:

  • Open sores or infections in the area
  • Skin with eczema in acute crisis
  • Very prominent moles (risk of snagging) but you can use the clippers, being careful to go around them, even if in the majority of cases, the blade guard will prevent you from damaging the mole, the blade will be blocked by the guard well before that.
  • A metal allergy
  • or obviously if the only result you want is baby skin

For everyone else, and that's 95% of people, an intimate trimmer is perfectly suitable and will be more practical than other solutions.

The truth about intimate trimmers in 2025? It's simple: they're the most practical, safest, and most versatile tool for maintaining your sensitive areas. Men, women, sensitive skin or not, beginners or experienced with other methods: it works for almost everyone.

So yes, there's an initial investment and blades to replace. But when you compare it with the alternatives in terms of cost, comfort, speed, safety, and above all, freedom, the math is easy.

The important thing is to choose a suitable model (waterproof, with lighting, quality blades) and not to fall into the gender trap. Your hair, your style, your trimmer: it's as simple as that.

And if you're still hesitant, remember that in 2025, taking care of yourself without worrying is exactly what we all deserve.
