The promises of intimate razor blades
All brands have understood it well, the intimate shaving market has exploded in recent years. So inevitably, it is impossible to escape the advertisements extolling the merits of "special intimate area" blades. But between well-oiled marketing and real innovation, what really changes from a regular razor? Is it worth investing in a much more expensive razor? Is it a razor like any other with pretty colors? Are the blades really different?
Well, the good part: it's not just about marketing.
Manufacturers have really reworked their razors to create different razors or devices (but are they better?). As a general rule, we will find in the sales arguments of these special products: designs adapted to sensitive areas, anti-cut technologies (well, we'll come back to that later because it's still a razor blade, eh ...) and specific protections.
Ok let's dig a little deeper into this.
What Really Changes
A Design Thought for Sensitive Areas
Razors are no longer satisfied with a simple makeover in blue or pink. The adaptations are real:
- Refined heads to access complex areas
- Ergonomic handles facilitating sometimes acrobatic positions
- Redesigned blade spacing to minimize irritation
So, is it better? Yes, of course it's a little better than a standard razor.
Real Innovations in Protection?
Beyond advertising slogans, some marketing terms are supposed to bring improvements:
- Micro combs effectively guide hairs
- Lubricating strips incorporate protective agents
- Systems like SkinGuard significantly reduce cuts
The "gentle" shave
To sell this type of razor, we often hear about gentle shaves. But what is it really?
Here are some examples of gentle shaving arguments from some of the big names in shaving (Gilette for example):
- Comfort Guard Technology: The SkinGuard, located between the two blades, absorbs pressure and smoothes the skin, reducing direct contact between the blades and the skin .
- Low cutting force blades: They exert minimal pressure on the hair follicle, reducing the pulling and tugging that causes irritation .
- Micro-comb: It directs the hairs for a more efficient cut, limiting the need to go over the same area again .
- Lubricating strips: Placed before and after the blades, they minimize friction during shaving .
- Hair Elevation: The Comfort Guard slightly elevates the hair above the skin surface, allowing only the top portion of the follicle to be cut without touching its base .
What do we really think about these arguments?
What seems true:
- The razor does indeed feature a comfort guard between the blades, called SkinGuard, which aims to reduce pressure on the skin: Less pressure, potentially less irritation.
- It only has two blades, unlike other multi-blade razors, which can potentially reduce irritation: Ok so potentially less irritation but what's the point of having more blades then? So less irritation per pass but fewer hairs cut = need to go over the same area more times = More irritation?
- The razor includes lubricating strips to reduce friction during shaving: OK, let's say that even if it irritates the skin, it's not bad to be able to relieve it a little, but inevitably less good than a real aftershave treatment (or non-irritation).
Which is probably just over-the-top marketing:
- The claim of an "extremely gentle" shave. Although the razor may be gentler than others, no shave is completely without irritation because you are still rubbing an ultra-sharp and cutting blade against your skin.
- The promise of completely eliminating irritation and ingrown hairs. These problems can be reduced but not necessarily eliminated for all users.
- The idea that the razor "prevents" irritation and ingrown hairs. It can potentially reduce them by shaving less closely?
- The suggestion that the razor is revolutionary or one of a kind. While it may offer benefits, other brands also offer solutions for sensitive skin. But hey, that's the marketing game after all.
Our conclusion: Obviously, most of it is marketing, but if you want to use a blade razor for your private parts, go for a razor made for that purpose. The few advantages it will bring will always be something.
Complete Packages for an Optimal Shave
Well, you will have understood, no miracle on the blade side, it cuts, it slices, it irritates, it is potentially dangerous (yes it can cut even with any added protection ...) So some brands hide behind razors with blades in packs with:
- Shaving gels specially formulated for sensitive skin
- Reinforced dermatological tests
- Post-shave care to limit irritation and ingrown hairs
Ok, that's better! If you're going to do damage to your skin, you might as well be able to relieve it as soon as possible. Now, we haven't measured the effectiveness or quality of these products (especially from large stores) but the intention is good.
Our recommendation: create your own shaving routine, especially if you use blade razors, and choose your pre- and post-shave products carefully.
Marketing vs. Reality of Intimate Shaving Blades
The Truth That Hurts
Despite all these advances, a blade remains a blade. Which still means:
- Risks of cuts, even if some "protective" blades exist, they are often made to prevent deep or serious cuts. But still, on intimate areas, a cut of a few centimeters even shallow would be serious, and that, with a razor blade, nothing can prevent it.
- Almost obligatory irritation: it is almost impossible to avoid irritation when passing a razor blade over the skin because friction does exist. It can be reduced thanks to special blade technologies and with an ultra-well-controlled and gentle shave.
- Ingrown hairs are inevitable for some skin types: Once you shave and go back under the skin, it is impossible to promise that there will be no ingrown hairs.
What Is Really Better
Compared to a classic razor, the intimate versions provide:
- Improved handling for difficult areas: this is always good to take, especially since we know the positions to adopt to shave certain areas...
- A reduction in irritation, without eliminating it completely
- Superior protection, but not infallible

Body Trimmers: An Alternative, Not a Miracle Solution
Some people consider using a regular lawn mower, but this is not ideal:
- The blade guards are spaced too far apart and risk letting skin through and creating cuts.
- Metal blades are not suitable for all hairs, hair in intimate areas is very very special
- Combs reduce precision but are mandatory on most body groomers because their blades are not self-protecting.
- Heads are often made for the body (torso, armpits etc...) less for the private parts
- Pinching in the folds is common
- Chargers are often proprietary (where is that damn charger?!)
- The battery doesn't last very long
- (And in reality we find them rather not very pretty)
Body Trimmer Models
- Gillette Body & Intimate : Three combs, sensitive accessory included
- Philips Bodygroom 7000 : Advanced safety technology
- Braun Body Groomer Series 5 BG5370 : Clog for sensitive areas
- Philips OneBlade : 5 mm cutting body comb
- Braun Body Groomer 5 BG5340 : Increased protection for intimate areas
These trimmers are designed to minimize irritation and cuts on sensitive male areas but mostly have all the usual flaws:
- metal blade
- need a dedicated shoe
- proprietary charging socket
- sometimes not waterproof
- not a design you want to leave visible in your bathroom
- they try to do everything in one (you can do everything, but you can't do everything well...)
In 2025, a New Approach is Possible
It is in response to these observations that we designed the Billy intimate trimmer. Rather than adapting sharp blades to sensitive areas, we have completely redesigned the technology with ceramic:
- Zero risk of cuts thanks to a unique blade design
- Perfect precision without danger
- An ultra-efficient and precise haircut thanks to the ceramic blade
- An easy shave in less than two minutes
- A 100% waterproof design (yes, you can shave with it in the shower)
- A special intimate area trimmer
- An incredible design that we want to leave visible in our bathroom
- USB-C charging or better, with a wireless charging pad
- A long-term, economical solution
- Integrated LED lighting to see where you are cutting
To conclude
As we have seen, "special intimate area" blades are not just a marketing ploy: they offer real improvements over traditional razors. But in 2025, should we be satisfied with improvements when safer solutions exist?
So the real question is, do you like using a razor on your sensitive, intimate parts ?
If so, the answer is easy to see, go for a dedicated razor, create a little pre- and post-shave care routine and treat yourself while maintaining your private parts.
If not, then go for a simpler, quicker and easier solution to maintain your intimate areas and discover the billy intimate trimmer ... it will change your life ;)
