Razors with Blades: Advantages and (Big) Disadvantages
Many men still use a blade razor for their intimate parts. We understand why: it's accessible, it doesn't seem expensive, and it allows you to have completely smooth skin. But what are the real risks?
The Advantages of the Razor
- Ultra close shave possible
- Easily available everywhere
- Low initial purchase price (well, of course, it depends on the model... the new trendy products are very expensive for hand razors)
- No battery or electricity needed
The Disadvantages
- High risk of cuts (and that really hurts and could be serious)
- Irritations almost guaranteed
- Rapid and uncomfortable regrowth
- Risk of infections via cuts/micro-cuts
- Frequent ingrown hairs
“Security” Blades: Fact or Fiction?
You may have heard of safety razors as a safer option. Here’s what you need to know.
The Promise of Safety Blades?
We went around the web to find out what the brands that sell them say and here is what they say about razor "safety blades":
- Limited blade exposure: Only a small portion of the blade is exposed, enough to shave but not enough to cause serious injury .
- Protective comb: The razor head has a comb that regulates the distance between the skin and the blade. This comb correctly positions the hairs in front of the blade while protecting the skin .
- Multi-piece structure: The safety razor is generally composed of three pieces: the handle, the comb and the head. The blade is placed between the closed comb and the head, which curves it slightly to optimize its effectiveness while limiting its direct contact with the skin .
- Controlled Shaving Angle: The razor's design guides the user to maintain an optimal shaving angle, reducing the risk of accidental cuts .
Well, the idea is good, the sales pitch is good in principle: less exposed blade = less risk of deep cuts. You see the thing? less risk of deep cuts but what about the other cuts? 😭
And Reality
So as you understood, "safe" here does not mean "without danger".
A razor sharp blade is still a blade. It can easily create big cuts and clearly we want to avoid that...
The safety razor can indeed reduce the risk of serious cuts, but do we really want to avoid only serious injuries? Especially on an area as delicate as the testicles....
In short, if you decide to switch to a "safe" razor for your private parts, be aware that safety is only relative and that the danger remains the same as with other razors, one false move and it's a disaster...

The Real Dangers to Know About
Well, on the other hand, if you're not sure you want to put such a sharp blade near your testicles, we understand, it's really something we don't want either... Because there are still some drawbacks to using a razor to shave your balls:
Immediate Risks
- Cuts (from micro-cuts to more serious cuts)
- Irritations and redness
- Shaving burns
- Intense itching
Longer Term Risks
- Infections due to microcuts
- Recurring ingrown hairs
- Increased risk of STIs (due to microlesions) according to this study
- Changing skin texture
The Advantages
Come on, let's try to find some advantages to using a blade razor to shave your parts:
- Close shave (if you have the knack) it's ultra clean, well it won't last but while it lasts, we understand that you might appreciate it
- It's supposed to be manly 😂 "A real guy shaves his balls with a blade". Nah, we're kidding, this isn't an 80s western, your manhood won't be enhanced (but if you cut yourself, it might hurt him though...)
- It can look nice in your bathroom. It's a question of style, but let's not lie to ourselves, some "new" razors are rather stylish and we approve (even if we much prefer our billys ahah)
And if you really want to shave your parts with a razor, here are some tips
Okay, one last time (we repeat ourselves), we'd like to be honest with you: using a razor on your testicles is definitely not the safest solution in 2025, nor is it the one we recommend. But if you absolutely must give it a try, we'd really like you to minimize the risks, so here are some tips:
First and foremost: Preparation is crucial
First rule of thumb: take a nice hot shower, not just a quick wash. The heat will soften the hairs and relax the skin, making shaving less risky. Clean the area well with a mild soap (not your perfumed shower gel which may irritate).
VERY IMPORTANT: Use a NEW blade . Not one that has been sitting in your shower for two weeks. The area is too sensitive to take that risk.
The Expert Technique
Here are the steps to follow scrupulously:
- Apply shaving gel or shaving oil GENEROUSLY (oil is best because you can see what you are doing)
- Light the area you are shaving well so you can see what you are doing.
- Gently stretch the skin (like a sail, not like an elastic band)
- ALWAYS shave in the direction of the hair growth.
- Make SLOW and SHORT movements
- Rinse your blade after EACH pass
- ZERO pressure on the razor (let it glide on its own)
Post-Shave Care
After shaving, you're not done:
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water
- DRY by PATTENING (no rubbing)
- Apply a cream or lotion WITHOUT alcohol or perfume
- Wear cotton underwear (let it breathe)
The Golden Rules to NEVER Forget
- Use a DEDICATED razor (yes, you need a razor just for that)
- Always use an ultra clean, sharp and if possible NEW blade
- Avoid tight clothing for 24 hours
- If your skin says stop, you listen to it.
- At the slightest sign of irritation, take a break
- If it itches/burns for more than 48 hours = see a doctor
Really? These precautions may seem excessive, but your testicles deserve this attention. Or... you could simply opt for a safer and more modern solution like the billy clipper. Just a suggestion... 😉
Why Take So Many Risks in 2025?
Let's be honest: even if you follow all of these tips to the letter, using a razor on your testicles is still a risky practice and definitely not for everyone.
